THIS WAY UP by Lindsay Wood
This Way Up can best be described as a wonderful feel good read that will have instant appeal to students aged 10-16. It deals with a problem that many teenagers of today face – obesity. In this story we follow the adventures of Corey as he joins an orienteering club at the insistence of his mother who wants him to exercise, mix with others and stop playing online games constantly. Sir Peter Snell says the This Way Up is 'creative, well written and tugs at the emotions.

THE HAYSTACK by Jack Lasenby
Set in the small Waikato dairying town of Waharoa in the troubled times of the 1930s Depression, The Haystack provides a rare insight into the lives of people in these times and the way New Zealand was. On one level, rather than focusing on the enormous difficulties people faced, The Haystack is a joyous and optimistic celebration of a community that looks after its own. On a second level, it will be an eye-opener to today’s generation of electronically entertained children as to how powerful the imagination can be as a force for learning, enjoyment and the stimulation of young minds.

THE SHEEP ON THE 4TH FLOOR by Leonie Thorpe
The Sheep on the Fourth Floor is aimed at a year 7-10 audience, dealing as it does with common issues that confront all teenagers on the cusp of young adulthood. The main theme of the book, however, is a dilemma that all people (including the adults of the story) face – the use of live animals for medical experiments. In the novel, Anna and two boys confront this ethical challenge head on and resolve it in a way that is true to their principles. The Sheep on the Fourth Floor is beautifully written, fast-paced and will appeal to both boys and girls in the 10-16+ year-old age group.
