The BP Design a School Shelter Challenge

The following BP Challenge can be spread over a series of classroom sessions. Lots of brainstorming is required for this one!

Scenario

Your school playground is in an open place and very exposed to the wind and rain. Your school has been given $2000 to build a suitable shelter, which can also be used as part of the playground equipment.

Task

Your task is to design and make a model of a playground shelter.

You must ‘sell’ your model to the school principal and the class as the best design for your school.

You must stay within the budget and your structure should meet safety requirements.

Process

Brainstorm the desirable features of the shelter.

Analyse the direction of the prevailing weather and the range of wind strengths.

Research existing structures already being manufactured.

Research the safety requirements for such a structure.

Sketch the ideas and produce a working drawing including specifications,

Estimate the cost of the structure and make modifications as necessary.

Make a model of the shelter.

Present the ideas to the principal and the students.

Canvass the responses to the design, modify as appropriate.

Make a recommendation.

Materials

Coreflute • Card • Ice Block Sticks • Paper • Plastic • Sellotape • Coloured pencils or pens

Conditions

Your group can use only the materials supplied for your construction.

The construction must be able to be carried to the presentation area.

You will have three minutes to ‘sell’ your idea as the best design.

Remember that safety is an important aspect of the design.

Judging Criteria

Your presentation including your model and salesmanship.

Ability to keep within the budget.

Fulfilment of safety requirements.

Ability of the structure to afford protection from the windand the rain.

Possible Variations

Design and construct a sandpit shade

Design and construct a portable shelter for camps and sports days.

Design and construct a waterproof shelter.
