Count the total number each of cars, trucks, buses, cyclists and pedestrians going past the school in a ten minute period.
Try on different days at the same time each day and different times on the same day.

Count the different colours of cars and find the most/least popular colour.

Discuss various ways of recording and what they can record. Use tables, tally charts and graphs.

Record all information in appropriate form and display results.

Brainstorm and list all information that can be gained from the results.

Pupils write sentences to summarize their findings.

LISTS AND MORE LISTS

(Multi Level language Activities)

Why do people write lists? Discuss.

• List as many types of lists that you can that people could write.

• Introduce the scenario that the family is going on holiday either in NZ or overseas.

• In groups, pupils write a list of all the things that have to be done before departure.

• Assign jobs on the list to specific family members.

• Have pupils justify their lists to other groups and the class.

• Order points on the list in priorities. Justify.

• Try lists for shifting house shopping going fishing tidying the house


WHO SPEAKS WHAT AND WHERE

An ongoing language investigation (Mdle/Snr)

• What languages are spoken (fully or partly) by pupils in the classroom, around the school. Survey.

• What languages are spoken in the homes of your district. Survey.

• What books are available at the local library in different languages?

• What languages are they?

• How often are they taken out?

• What languages are offered at the secondary school the students will be going to?

• Pupils research and compile a world language map.

• Invite people who speak other languages on a regular basis to speak to your pupils.

• Learn common greetings and numbers in at least four different languages.
