Environmental Challenges for Teachers

Plan a Trip to the Bush or Beach

Plan a class trip to at least one of these unique environments
The visit will provide countless opportunities for essential skill development in language, science, social studies and the arts in an E.O.T.C. setting.

Before the trip I have given the pupils opportunities to …

  1. visualise, discuss and list what they think they will see and hear there

  2. paint a picture of what they think the bush/beach will look like

  3. list what they think people visiting these places do and why they visit them see pictures in books and listen to stories about the beach/bush

  4. write letters to parents asking them to accompany them on the visit and discuss the importance of not littering

  5. discuss suitable clothing and food to be taken

During the visit I have given the pupils opportunities to …

  1. explore the environment and show respect for it
  2. observe, list and draw, plants and animals
  3. observe and draw the many different parts of the environment so they can remember them
  4. sit quietly, listen for and list the many different sounds
  5. find a special place of their own and sit quietly to enjoy and 'get in touch' with the environment
  6. know the importance of not taking anything from the environment (except litter)
  7. observe and list all the animals, birds and insects and their habitats they can find in the environment

After the visit I have given the pupils the opportunity to …

  1. share their experiences with the class and each other
  2. draw pictures, make models and write captions of their discoveries and share them with others
  3. a group/class mime of the bush/beach
  4. put their artistic and written contributions into a class big book or wall story and share with other classes
  5. list reasons why people should visit these environments
  6. list ideas about what more they would like to find out the environments and how to do this
