The Adventure Continues

ACTIVITY FOUR: Describing the Scene

Tell students that The time machine has now arrived in the future and has come to rest on a plateau high above the city. They have never seen anything like it before - even in their wildest imagination.

Each student writes a short report describing the scene in front of them, eg

  • what do they see?
  • what do they hear?
  • how do they feel?

Read reports out to the class or record them as a radio report to be sent back to earth

ACTIVITY FIVE: Painting the Scene

The explorers find to their surprise that their cameras will not work in this future time zone. Good mission planning has anticipated such a problem and paints, crayons, brushes and other art materials have been included.

As a group they set about painting/drawing the scene in mural form.Remind the groups to —

  • try and mix some unusual colours that will accurately depict the scene
  • start off by planning the outline before painting
  • fill in the areas of colour
  • then fill in details and patterns of what they see
  • Are there any plants or animals?
  • Are there any other human or life forms?

Groups make oral reports back to the class.

ACTIVITY SIX: Meeting the Inhabitants

The group of explorers now move off down a path towards the city. As they round a bend, they come across a group of humanoids dressed in very strange clothing

The explorers try to speak to them, explain the purpose of the mission and that they come in peace. The explorers find that these people do not speak but use signs and body language to communicate.

In pairs, have one student prepare a mime to explain that he/she comes from earth and the purpose of the mission. The second student must prepare a mime that shows that they are welcome to visit. They would also like to know about what life was like in the past.

Perform some of the mimes to the class.

ACTIVITY SEVEN: Signposts of the Future

The expedition members now move on to the outskirts of the city. They come across a large pole that looks like a signpost. Instead of words, the post uses pictures to indicate the various parts of the city.

Each group designs and constructs this signpost of the future. Groups should consider the following:What makes this city different from cities that they know?

  • What signs would be on the post?
  • How would the commercial area be indicated?
  • How would recreational areas be indicated?
  • How would industrial areas be indicated?
  • How would different forms of transport be indicated?
  • How would underground activities and areas be indicated?

Groups construct and make signposts and then have other groups try to interpret the meanings of the signs.
