The Adventure Continues

LIVING IN THE FUTURE

The expedition members have been made welcome in the city and will spend a week there to conduct an in- depth study as to how life has changed in the last 100 years. The inhabitants are now able to converse with the explorers which makes things very much easier!

Choose from the following group and individual activities to give a good balance between the language modes.

The number of activities you choose for your students will depend on the length of time you wish to run the unit.

Television/Video - a group activity

Explain that an excellent way to understand a new culture or civilization is to examine their media. Groups prepare a Television/Video news and views production covering the following points:

  • Interviews with civic leaders discussing daily happenings and future projects
  • Weather Bulletins showing climate change
  • Environmental topics
  • News from other parts of the world
(Some group members assume the identity of the people being interviewed.)

ADVERTISEMENTS: An individual Activity

A hundred years of progress has seen the development of very exciting new consumer goods. Have each student design an advertisement to show a new and hitherto unknown product that can be used inside or outside the home.

A group brainstorming session could be used as motivation.

Display the colourful advertisements around the classroom, the school foyer and the corridor.

FASIONS: Group and Individual Activities

Fashions are constantly changing but have the students imagine just what would happen over 100 years! Students design and make clothes for the future. Consider clothes for:

  • leisure and sportswear
  • work
  • formal wear

Have groups parade their clothes for the rest of the class and devise a suitable commentary during the parade to explain the suitability and styles of the clothes
