the adventure continues … Pg2
Activity Three - First Aid/Health
… discuss, demonstrate and report
There are many minor and some fairly serious injuries
suffered by some of the survivors. Have the students decide on he range and types
of injuries that would likely to have been sustained in a plane crash.
After discussion and research from first aid books
have each group …
- • give oral reports on how they would treat these injuries
• give a practical demonstration of the treatment of at least two injuries
-
Injuries could include broken limbs, shock, burns,
abrasions, concussion.
An improvised stretcher will have to be constructed
to carry one of the group members. Only natural 'jungle materials can be used along
with some string that has been found in the wreckage of the plane.
Activity Four - The Incredible
Jungle - research, vocabulary, paint and construct
Before the adventure continues, some research is to
be carried out into the type of environment that the survivors have arrived. From
the films, books and Internet sites, assign each group to research one of the following
topics
- the types of vegetation found in the jungle
- the animals they will encounter in the jungle
- the fish of the Amazon River
- the birds of the jungle
- the Indian tribes of the Amazon Jungle
- the Indian tribes of the Amazon Jungle
Have each group report their findings back to the
class and list information on a chart for future reference.
Brainstorm and build up a group and class Amazon Jungle
vocabulary list. Write the words on cards and join together to make jungle vocabulary
mobiles
The next task is for the pupils to turn the classroom
or hallway into an Amazon Jungle. This will be done by painting and construction.
Ideas can include:
- painted paper vines can climb and twist up luxuriant
trees made out of cardboard and paper
- colourful shapes of parrots and brilliantly coloured
butterflies can be hung from the branches as mobiles
- don't forget the monkeys, baboons and boa constrictors,
lily pads that support the weight of a human. cobras, pythons and eels , alligators
and piranha
- trees with large root structures partially above
the ground
Make each construction group responsible for one part
of the classroom. Make
sure that the pupils roughly sketch and plan out their construction
before starting!
Several large group murals could be part of the jungle
or even used as an alternative to the construction.
Activity Five - The Sounds of the
Jungle - compose music
Using digital recorders, have groups compose sound pictures
of the incredible sounds of the jungle animals and birds.
- use a variety of voice, tuned and untuned percussion
instrument sounds
- aim for contrast such as intensity, pitch and volume.
Don't forget periods of silence or relative calm.
Play these recorded sound pictures in the jungle environment
to give it real atmosphere!
