the adventure continues. Pg3 …

Activity Six - Birds and Animals … mime and movement activities

Have each group develop a movement sequence to go with the sound picture of the jungle.

Synchronise the sound picture with the movement/mime. This will take quite a number of rehearsals until the students can remember and anticipate the sounds that are coming up next.

Activity Seven - Surviving - design and write

Food is plentiful in the jungle but it will have to be caught and gathered.

Have the pupils design traps, snares and instruments that can catch animals, birds and fish necessary to survive.

Instructions for their use will also have to be included in the design. Have students …

  1. present their design to the class
  2. through discussion, decide which designs are the most practical
  3. write special 'jungle recipes for their favourite jungle dish, eg python pie

Activity Eight - The Jungle Adventure - planning and enacting a dramatic sequence

Have each group plan out and then enact a dramatic sequence of their trek and survival in the jungle up to the point where they reach Obidos. This should be planned out in some detail by each group who should write a 'storybook sequence to give some structure to the drama.

Ideas for inclusion are …

  1. they have a radio but only a very short battery life. What short messages do they send each day?how do they catch and prepare their food.
  2. they meet a tribe of Amazonian Indians and try to communicate with them.
  3. they come across the Amazon River and reason that following it is probably the best way of finding a way out.
  4. there are encounters with wild animals such as snakes and alligators.
  5. signals for help will have to be sent. How? There may be many ways!
  6. they have to cross the river and avoid the piranha.
  7. the injured have to be cared for.
  8. they may try to construct a boat.
  9. large mosquitos that can carry two strains of malaria are a constant problem. They know that the Indian tribes crush a certain plant and then rub this on their bodies to repel the mosquitos and some plants are used as an antidote. How do they get this information from the Indians when neither group can understand the others language?

They finally meet a search party just outside of Obidos and are saved!!!

Have pupils enact this drama in the constructed jungle with the sound picture background. Invite parents and other classes to enjoy the drama.
