Environmental Challenges: Level 1-2

Two challenges, one for pupils and one for teachers.

TREES & BIRDS CHALLENGE. At the conclusion of this on-going challenge the pupils will be able to put a tick by each statement. Use each statement below as the basis for planning simple activities for your pupils to experience and appreciate the natural world.

Trees

  1. I have chosen a favourite tree in the school grounds and can say why I really like it.
  2. I can draw its leaves.
  3. I have made a bark rubbing of my tree trunk.
  4. I can describe the feel of the bark.
  5. I know the names of three birds that visit my favourite tree.
  6. I have drawn a picture of my favourite tree with me sitting under it.
  7. I have sat by myself under the tree and made a list of sounds I have heard.
  8. I know what makes these sounds.
  9. I know the names of three native trees.
  10. I know the names of three trees that are not native.
  11. I have made a list of the parts of a tree.
  12. My picture is part of my class tree mural.

Birds

  1. I know the name of my favourite type of bird.
  2. I can describe my bird to the class and they can guess what it is.
  3. I can draw my favourite bird and know the colours of its feathers.
  4. I know what my favourite bird likes to eat.
  5. I can recognise my favourite bird by its song
  6. My bird picture is part of my class bird mural.
  7. I know the names of at least three other birds.
  8. I can say the Maori names of these birds.
  9. I can tell the difference between these birds by drawing them and describing them to the class.
  10. I have helped set up and look after our class bird table.
