Using the skills of an entrepreneur

What is an entrepreneur?

Are there any fictional characters from movies, TV that you think could fit the description of an entrepreneur?

Now think about any people you either know personally (family, friends, neighbours) or know of in your community that could fit the description of an entrepreneur?

What about well known New Zealanders or international figures?

Considering all the people you have identified as being ‘entrepreneurial” — what is it about them that suggests they are — i.e. what skills, attributes, characteristics do they have?

Choosing your own venture

In groups or as a class, brainstorm a venture that could be used as a fund raising venture that the whole class would like to work towards (i.e. raising money for class trip or piece of equipment for the school or maybe raising money for a local charity).

The ideas

In groups brainstorm a list of goods or services you could offer to raise funds.i.e offer a service i.e. washing cars or by selling goods e.g. selling toffee apples at lunchtime. Be innovative — try and think of things that may not have been done before.

Things to consider:

How will they know if people want their product or service?

Do they have the skills to make the product or offer the service? If not, how will they get these skills?

Will they have to purchase anything first? How will they raise they raise the money or are there other ways to source product?

How much are they aiming to raise? How possible is this?

For how long will the fund raiser be continued?

How ill they tell people about the products and services they are offering?

Do they have any competition? — i.e. other fundraising activities happening ion the school in community

Working together as a team weigh up which idea is most likely to be the best option.

Putting the plan into action

As a team put together a plan of action of details of the fund raiser. The plan should include:

Set a realistic goal i.e. to raise $$.

Timeline — when will the event happen or is it ongoing over 1 week etc

What tasks need to be undertaken and who should be responsible for this task.

Is there someone that could act as a mentor (i.e. a teacher or person in the community)to help with advice

Choose the company that interests you most

Research the company through its website

Write a profile that covers

Who runs the company

What they do.

What inspired them to run their own business?

What is their biggest challenge to overcome?

Present the findings from your interview in oral, written or graphical form. For example you could create a flowchart of the path from the entrepreneur’s idea to present day or write a short biography or story

OR

Choose an entrepreneur in your community to profile.

First, you need to develop a set of interview questions to ask the entrepreneur. Focus on covering off:

- What they do and the path to where they are today

- Who or what helped them achieve their success

- What has been the biggest challenge to overcome?

- What advice they would have for young people thinking of starting their own business

Present the findings from your interview in oral, written or graphical form. For example you could create a flowchart of the path from the entrepreneur’s idea to present day or write a short biography or story.

What would you like to be?
If you could be an entrepreneur/start up your own business — what would you want to be and why? Remember, there can be all types of businesses, from music and film, through to food, fashion, science and technology.
