Making Your Pet's Life Easier …
an exercise in creative thinking
Curriculum Areas: English/Language Arts
Links to Art & Craft, Science, Technology
Levels: 2-5
Motivation
Find out how many children have watched TV shopping
programmes. Develop the idea that they all try to tempt us to buy 'things we don't
need but want' that will possibly make our lives easier!
Each group now becomes the 'creatives' at an advertising
agency who have been given the job of inventing things for pets that will make their
lives easier and a 'lot more fun'!
- Groups or class brainstorm ideas of pet inventions
… the more zany the better, eg
- a rocket powered skateboard on a leash for a dog
to make sure the owner keeps up during walks
- a self filling cat milk saucer that is always full
to the brim
- an electonic garden bone locator
What to Do
- Divide children into groups of three. Ask each group
to come up with one pet invention. One pupil in the group writes a paragraph describing
the invention, another pupil draws a picture to go with the description, and the
third pupil presents the group's invention to the rest of the class.
- Now all the group co-operate to design an advertising
poster, magazine and/or newspaper advertisement featuring their invention to …
- appeal to pet owners
- appeal to the pets themselves.
Extra for Experts
Design a one page advertising junk mail letterbox
flyer of superb pet inventions to either…
- tempt the pet who has everything
- or
- tempt the pet owner with more money than sense
