USING AN OVERHEAD PROJECTOR

Did you know the overhead projector is one of the few technology teaching aids that was actually invented for educational use and not adapted from an instrument intended for entertainment? Why is it not used more often in our clasrooms? The following suggestions are designed to re-kindle your interest in the overhead projector and start you and your pupils experimenting in OHP classroom use.

COLOUR IN PACKAGING DESIGN

Designers use colour very carefully when designing a new package for a product. They want it to stand out from others and they know that colour affects how we feel about a product. Try this fascinating unit where students explore the use of colour and take on a design brief.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEFORE?

Can you work a video player? What was life like before electronic devices? Was there ever a time without television? A technology/language based unit where students explore the world of electronic, electrical and communication devices. Strong links to maths.

TECHNOLOGY CAN SAVE LIVES

This unit is for middle and senior school pupils using all the important and current road safety messages as a context for exploring technology.It encourages pupils to use the impact of technology to get themessages across to younger students, and at the same time, consolidating the importance of the safety themes as students translate them into visual and oral formats using available school and classroom technology.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

n this web based research unit, students learn that energy efficiency means more than turning things off when we are not using them. They gain an understanding of where and how electricity is used in our households and identify positive energy saving tips they can take, The unit concludes with the students making plans to apply these learnings to their household situation

BP CHALLENGES

HANDMADE SOAP BP CHALLENGE

Groups are challenged to produce a set of 3 soaps — individually wrapped and labeled and attractively boxed in a cardboard container as a set.

BP GINGERBEER CHALLENGE

This is a really fun challenge where students are challenged to brew and bottle a six-pack of ginger beer. As well as brewing their secret recipe – they are also challenged to label them and promote them with logos and designs created by the students – including the carry pack. Best suited to Yrs 7-10 although younger students will just love this too.

DESIGN A SCHOOL SHELTER

BP - The Design a School Shelter CHALLENGE: The following BP Challenge can be spread over a series of classroom sessions. Lots of brainstorming is required for this one! Scenario: Your school playground is in an open place and very exposed to the wind and rain. Your school has been given $2000 to build a suitable shelter, which can also be used as part of the playground equipment.

BP AIR GUITAR CHALLENGE

The annual Air Cuitar Contest is being held at your school. Students are challenged to design two costumes suitable for either gender. The Challenge is judged on the design of the costume, fit of the costume and the actual air guitar performance.

BP METEORITE/RUBBISH

Two great BP Challenges. A crew of a space ship must repair a hole in the side of their ship caused by a meteorite strike. Challenge Two deals with finding a way to keep a school litter free.

BP POB GOES WEASLE/BEACH

Challenge One: Pop Goes the … One morning you are sitting with your friends blowing up balloons. You let them go and watch them whoosh around the room. Suddenly someone says“I wonder if we can use a balloon to pop a balloon?” The task is to use the power of an inflated balloon to burst another balloon

Challenge Two: Reach the Beach You are on a cliff top with a group of friends and can see a great beach below. It is a very difficult steep path which is difficult to walk down so you decideto build a ramp roll to roll your bags down. This will make it easier to climb down. The task is to build and test a ramp enabling your bags to roll down

BP KNOWING & FINDING CHALLENGE

Finding our way and knowing what to do! The challenge is to devise clear instructional signs that can be understood by young children who cannot read yet and also students who have English as a second language.

GETTING THE BEST FROM SEARCH ENGINES

Teach yourself and your students to get the best search results possible from search engines using the add, subtract and multiply method. Your students will save hours or time and achieve excellent search results on the net.

CREATING A COMMUNITY PROFILE

Real Life Technology Social Studies & Maths where students: gain an understanding of the diversity within their local community, make a community profile and visual presentation and develop facility in using an interactive website map.

EXPLORING INVENTIONS

Technology Unit for years 1-4 where students share ideas about the ways in which familiar technology and inventions affect peoples lives, Identify, clarify and question meanings and vocabulary linked to technology in oral and written language and converse about personal experiences with inventions and read aloud from own written labels and texts. Major Maori language component, full learning intentions, success criteria, skills developed and assessment criteria.

MAKING AN IMPACT

A major unit with a road safety theme where older students (Years 5-9) focus on styles of advertising of road safety messages on TV and billboards - identify and categorise themes. They are then challenged to use video and other AV technology available at school to design and create an exciting presentation which will modify behaviour of younger pupils. Strong links to health and language.

THE WORLD OF CARPETS

Years 5-9+
A major unit where students research the history of carpet, find out how it is produced, learn about the criteria for choosing carpet for a particular venue or purpose, explore advertising mediums and find out about carpet care and maintenence. THE GREAT SPACE CHALLENGE

Your students have been chosen to be part of a Space Station crew for a year. During this year they will face many challenges - many of which they can be prepared for and others they will have to solve on the spot. A great cross curriculum adventure for students aged 9 - 15. (Levels 3-5)

THE PERFECT HOME

What Makes The Perfect Home? A Technology/Social Studies/Language unit where students consider what makes the perfect home. They are then challenged to design their perfect home. Levels 2-4+

COPERATIVE TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES

The following challenges are best suited to years 3-4 studentsbut can be easily adapted for years 1-2.They give students a problem to solve by making something from materials provided,in a set time and use the BP Challenge format.

RIDE THE WIND

Ride the Wind: Levels 3-5. Cross curriculum challenges exploring the power of wind, feelings we have towards wind and practical and recreational uses of wind. Strong science and technology links.

BALLOON FIESTA

A fun technology and language based unit where students investigate the history of ballooning. plan their own fiesta and make their own hot air balloon. Most suited to ages 9 and upwards.

MACHINES

Years 1-4. Students explore and investigate the principles of machines and work. Incudes Curriculum Links, Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and Assessment Criteria. Strong links to the visual and performing arts including construction and sound pictures.

SIMPLE EXPLANATIONS

Your students are challenged to write simple explanations and instructions for everyday situations including community directions and common household appliances. They will find it is not quite as easy as they think. Students are introduced to a six step method and then get to try it out. An exercise in logical thinking.
